But the whole Noel vs twitter fiasco makes me very very sad.

Its hard to judge a person’s intent through typed words, sarcasm is difficult to convey without tone. And so , like Noel has said, as a comedian it is his instinct (and in his job description) to take jibes and turn them into something funny/silly and slightly offensive. In a comedy venue this works.

However with twitter as your comedy stage, and the world as your audience, with only the typed word, it doesn’t work quite as well. And unfortunately we find ourselves here.

I do not for a second think that Noel meant to cause such strife, or “incite” any bullying. He has as much right to respond to hate as any other. And had it not been for the “fans” then none of this would have happened. Noel would have made his remark, the person would probably not have liked it, blocked him, and that’s the end.

Instead the fans took it upon themselves to bully and be incessantly rude to a stranger. You, and the papers, can blame Noel as much as you feel, but it is the scarily obsessive fans that really did this. It is in your hands really. Bullying is not okay, and just because you are desperate to please some famous person, does not mean it is acceptable. It makes you seem a little pathetic. And the opposite has happened anyway. Instead of supporting and pleasing Noel, you have given him an awful reputation, shamed him from twitter and made him  ’the bad guy’ in the media. Shame.

tl;dr This wasn’t Noel’s fault. It was the silly fans who think bullying is ok.

Oh and one more thing. What makes me really, REALLY sad is that the media coverage of this is naming the fans of Noel as ‘Fieldmice’. So now the name that the blog Noelsfielding helped to come up with and publicize has been sullied and associated with negativity and bullying. Peachy.

I do not want to be known as a Fieldmouse if that is the connotation.

A stream of tweets from Sunflaaash, followed by a tweet from Noel shortly after. Has anyone else noticed they always tweet at similar times, like before or after, but never at the SAME time? Like, you never find a Noel tweet between two Sunflaash, or vice-versa.
